About the Project
The 2022-23 batch of the Gender Labs Fellows were oriented and trained on the basics of non-fiction story-telling and ways of building narratives on human rights issues. The Gender Labs Fellowship is a 10-month fellowship that trains young women to become facilitators and changemakers in their communities through the creation of safe spaces for conversations on sexual and reproductive health rights for adolescents.
As part of their ongoing immersive workshops, I, along with Chambal Academy's Meera Devi, designed a workshop that focuses on understanding story-telling and its application, which would aid the fellows for the documentation of their own work.
Process
The workshop was a mix of presentations, activities, and film screenings, with the aim to acquaint the fellows with the basic understanding of building narratives. Through participatory tools, the team was oriented with -
-
The basic techniques of building stories
-
Non-fiction storytelling: how is it different?
-
The various elements that make a good non-fiction story: Data, Interviews, News, Archival material
The session was designed to provide a detailed understanding of how to structure a story, the ethics of non-fiction story-telling, and the planning before its implementation.
